While it's a bit harder to see in the Merkur version, in the original
art work, these are clearly censers -- pots, filled with live coals, for
burning incense -- with smoke rising up from them. The one between the
male and the hermaphrodite has red marks to signify an incense suitable
to the Electric Fluid, and the one on the female side has dark blue (or
black) marks to signify an incense for the Magnetic Fluid.
