Dear Chenxsi,

>> Regarding the step 2 mental exercises, what exactly is the
recommanded degree of success? Is it like when you imagine a sound
for 5 minutes, there is to be absoultely no other thoughts intruding,
without any need to manage distractions? <<

That's certainly part of the requirement but these are aspects that, by
now, should come easily since the ability to focus your mind on one
thing was established with the Step One work. The main thrust of these
particular exercises is that a) you be able to create any sound you want
with your mind; and, b) that you be able to isolate just the single
sense of hearing from your other senses.

>> Do i have to continue doing the step 1 mental exercises, such as the
thought-observation and one-pointedness exercises? <<

You do not have to continue with the observation ("thought control")
exercise unless you find it pleasurable. The Step Two sensory
concentration exercises themselves are a form of "one-pointedness" so
there's also no need to continue the Step One version of the exercise,
per se. However, one-pointedness is still a valuable tool for the
magician at every stage of their development in terms of it being useful
for increasing one's understanding of any given topic.

What MUST be continued and steadily deepened is the emptiness of mind
meditation. This is one exercise that you should persist in
indefinitely.

My best to you,
:) Rawn Clark
