Re: Qabalah Theory Question

Message 01766 of 3835

Dear M,

>> My Question is: If The Pillar of Severity is Water, and Binah and Hod
correspond to Water, why would Geburah be Fire? And vice versa for the
other pillar. She casually mentions that water is reflected from Binah,
through Chesed into Hod, but doesn't explain why. <<

To my mind, this is a very good example of how the Western Qabbalah
needs to create very complex rationalizations in order to make its
interpretation of Jewish Kabbalah correspond with the ancient Jewish
texts such as the Sepher Yetzirah, Bahir and Zohar. Unfortunately, from
the perspective of Jewish Kabbalah it doesn't make any sense.

In order to make the Hermetic conception of the Elements fit into their
conception of the Jewish Tree of Life, Western Qabbalists invented the
theory of the "crossover of influences". According to this theory, the
Elemental attributions of the Sephirot crossover between the Supernal
Triad (Kether, Chokmah & Binah) and the triad of Tiphareth (Chesed,
Geburah & Tiphareth), thus passing the Water of Binah to Chesed and the
Fire of Chokmah to Geburah. In many ways, this reflects the western
concept that "power" is an exclusively masculine (Fire) attribute and
that "compassion" is an exclusively feminine attribute. According to
this theory, the Elemental correspondences do another crossover between
the Tiphareth triad and the Yesod triad (Netzach, Hod & Tiphareth).

My best to you,
:) Rawn Clark
