I have always avoided competition and just kept busy doing what was natural & 
direct in relating to the survival of self, wife, children and community.

Yes one has to be competent and have good skills in order to do well but, its 
purpose is never to rival or best another person.

Maybe you should define "competition" more clearly, to avoid 
misunderstanding ... There is competition (beat everyone else in 
order to win) and competition (playfully test yourself against 
someone else, or one aspect of yourself against another). Seems like 
the direction of the debate would change depending on which one you 
are talking about.
