I agree. I don't see competition as way of proving myself better than
others. I see it as an opportunity to test myself. Take basketball for
example...you could be an excellent shooter when you've got the court to
yourself and there are no distractions (a passive environment), but what
happens when there is a defender there, doing his best to stop you
scoring? (an active environment). Things you'd have been able to do
before with minimal effort/focus now require complete concentration. And
with this state of mind, competition stops being about winning, and
starts to become a dance between you and your defender.

Maybe you should define "competition" more clearly, to avoid 
misunderstanding ... There is competition (beat everyone else
in 
order to win) and competition (playfully test yourself against 
someone else, or one aspect of yourself against another). Seems
like 
the direction of the debate would change depending on which one
you 
are talking about.
