Some of the great alchemists of the past like Nicholas Flamel encoded their work so that only those who were already deeply spiritual will have the perserverence to break their encryption. For a person who is spiritually balanced there would be an even distribution between the mind, the spirit and the body, according to Bardon. Someone who pursues Alchemy only for the physical rewards then is not spiritually balanced; yet the physical IS needed in some proportion. The physical component of alchemy serves to balance the mental pursuit of knowledge in alchemy and in Kabbalah(this would seem to be why ancient works are encrypted) along with the spiritual pursuits which develop along the way as the physical and then mental focus together. As for your comment about sentience of the mineral kingdom, that is a concept that i've seen often covered in another philosophy/spirituality system that I've studied called the Law of One. In that system the whole universe is evolving energetically and increasing its spiritual vibration so throwing more energy in would lead to higher evolution(they posit that conciousness moves from mineral to animal to human to angelic). This is similar to what you've suggested. -Dave
