material resources for practice

I am in the process of reading through IIH and PME to get a handle on 
all the various tools, herbs, metals etc that I will need in order to 
start practicing. Does anyone have knowledge or suggestions of 
reputable resources to get these and is it possible to make 
substitutions of material that you have on hand. Thanx for any help!
