Dan,

There are schools of thought which teach this practice. From personal 
experience, I can tell you that I find it effective. Additionally, it 
follows alchemical formulae... in that you use excretia to "fertilize" the 
field from which your magical personality should bloom. I have never 
encountered anyone who made a point of this practice that said that they 
felt it was harmful.
