Thought Discipline

Quick question on thought dicpline exercise. I find holding a train of
thoughts quite easy and have none to only a couple distraction. When I
change my point to repeating a single word over and over again my mind
wanders like crazy. Do I need to master only one pointedness on the thought
train (since this is what Bardon says to do) or do I need be able to do both
thought train and repetition before I move on to emptiness?
