I think that what you mention is an important realization. The mind and all its little voices seems like madness because we perceive it as chaotic; there is no order to it. From there, it seems that the mind is simply a galloping runaway machine, without any brakes or purpose. At least there is a steering wheel, and someone to take it! =) For me, a way to first find that wheel was using zen koans (and other negations), which shut down the chatter momentarily.
