In reference to this, I received a message just the other day which
offers some illumination to this question of Bardon's smoking:

As I read in Erinnerung an Franz Bardon/Lumir Bardon & Dr. Milan Kumar,
Kumar states that Franz Bardon told him that he is trying to wring out
as much energy of his body, which karmically was stricken by a low
metabolism and a severe problem with his thyroid, which makes an
inflicted person sluggish, always tired, low in energy and depressed,
not to mention obese. Since Bardon was not to alter his physical karma
through magic means, he had to rely on mundane methods, among which
smoking was one. He was not concerned about long term health
ramifications, but rather fulfilling his task given by DP.

The book he is referring to is "Souvenirs de Franz Bardon" (French) /
"Erinnerung an Franz Bardon" (German), which has yet to be published in
English.
